Home Improvements: Wood Flooring
Wood is one of the most popular types of flooring material. One reason for its popularity is the wide variety of forms in which wooden flooring appears. Wood flooring can also be easier to care for than a carpet, being less easy to stain and less prone to becoming worn. Wooden floors are however, more attractive and warmer than tiled floors.
Wood flooring includes sanded floorboards, engineered wood, solid hardwood planks and parquet. Other types of flooring, such as laminate, can be made to look like wood. As well as thinking about the type of wood that you want to use for your flooring, you should also consider the color of the wood flooring and the type of finish. The finish will affect both the look and the texture of the surface. Wood floors come in a wide range of colors, from dark to light, and textures. The wood may be knotted and rustic or smooth and evenly colored. The wood can be finished with a sanded, matt look or polished and gleaming.
Wood flooring comes in a range of different forms. The pieces of wood that are used can be in many different shapes and sizes, including planks, boards, strips and blocks. The type that you choose will affect both the final appearance of the floor and the installation process. A parquet floor requires you to install the blocks in a particular pattern, for instance. It is also possible to use different types of wood, different colors or different styles of block or plan together on the same floor, so you can create exactly the style you want.
Installing wood flooring can be a difficult and time-consuming home improvement job. If you lack experience laying flooring then you may want to call in some professional help. When putting in new wood flooring it is important to ensure that you measure correctly before you cut anything to size and that you plan ahead. It is easy to begin laying wooden boards or blocks at one end of the room without considering what will happen when you reach the other side. Your room is unlikely to fit an exactly even number of wooden pieces, so you are going to have to cut some of them. You will have to be even more careful if you have an unusually shaped room or you are working in an older house that may have uneven walls. Wooden flooring can result in loud footsteps, particularly when it is used in an upstairs room. Installing a layer of sound proofing material under the floor can help to prevent this problem.
