Relocating anywhere is exciting, but somehow there is some extra excitement at the idea of getting to wake up every day and look at palm trees. Having fresh coconut and pineapple as an option for breakfast is a dream come true for a lot of people. However, don't let this excitement drown out the things that are necessary in your planning. Planning for your pets to relocate with you to Hawaii is very important, as Hawaii does have special regulations that do not come into play when moving from one continental state to another.
Up until recently all pets that came into Hawaii had to undergo four months in quarantine. However, now it is possible to get your pet out of quarantine in five days or less. Sometimes you can even get your pet out of quarantine the same day. There is a check list though that people must be aware of in order to save themselves a lot of money.
Never enter Hawaii with a puppy or kitten. They must spend the four months in quarantine if they are ten months old or younger. This means if you choose to come into this state with a puppy or kitten, it is very likely you will miss some of the most important time of their lives. Another requirement is that you must arrive between eight in the morning and four in the afternoon in order to qualify for the immediate release program.
Rabies is what Hawaii is most concerned about; all pets that enter into Hawaii must have had their rabies vaccinations at least twice. Hurrying to get your pet vaccinated before jumping on a plane will not help; the pet must have been vaccinated at least one month prior to arriving onto this island. Your pet must also have a working microchip in order to qualify. They will be checked at the airport.
People moving to Hawaii need to realize that if they do come into Hawaii and their animal is taken into quarantine the owner will be responsible for paying the bill for their animal. This means that as soon as you enter the state you are already racking up a bill that can be quite expensive to pay off. The cost is approximately fifteen dollars per day, per pet. With two pets staying four months, it is easy to see why it is worth the time to make sure your pet meets all the requirements first. Spending a few moments is a whole lot easier then spending hundreds of dollars.
