This is generally thought of as a business area with most of its buildings used for commercial use, but there are also quite a few high rise apartment blocks which are used for residential purposes. Downtown Honolulu is made up by four distinct areas, which are Central Business District, Capitol District, Waterfront and Chinatown. Most of the federal and state government buildings in Oahu are found in the Capitol District and the Central Business District, with Waterfront and Chinatown tending to be used for more residential purposes. Many of the historic events and buildings which have contributed towards the growth of Hawaii, and its sustainable economy and state are found in the downtown area. An iconic clock tower, which is perfectly placed to provide great view of the harbor is an integral part of the Aloha Tower Marketplace, which boasts great restaurants, bars, clubs and boutique shops.
There are a large number of restaurants in the downtown area which tends to serve customers from the business community during the week, and have a large number of cuisine options available looking for a meal. Because of the nature of the custom in this area, many of these tend to serve lunch and early evening meals only, and close after most of the business people depart. Chinatown also has many retailers offering fresh fish and produce every day, and many of the restaurants in the area do offer Asian food. There are also florists and shops that import a wide range of goods from the Asian countries. The compressed nature of the area means that foot and bus access is very convenient, and the superstores for Longs Drugstore, Kmart and Safeway on the edge of the district are easily accessible.
