Kalihi is an older residential area, but also a commercial area. It is mostly composed of older homes and old apartment buildings. In its commercial area, you can find many businesses such as repair shops and industrial shops, as well as other commercial venues. Part of this neighborhood is located near Kalihi Valley and part near the commercial section of Kapalama, therefore, sharing many services. Here you can find the popular Longs Drugstore, as well as Star Market, two popular stores, which provide for most of the residents shopping needs. Many good restaurants and food stores are also situated in the area. New additions to the neighborhood include a Walgreens pharmacy, across the street from this shopping center.

You can also find here fast food stores as well. For health care, residents go to the Kalihi-Palama Health Center, a full service and affordable clinic. Many of the Kapalama services are available to Kalihi residents due to its proximity. Families can enjoy many parks, some with basketball courts, and many open spaces catering to families' fun and entertainment. The Bishop Museum is a favorite of residents and dedicated to preserve Kalihi history, in the form of Hawaiian artifacts, and traditional and cultural items. The community has eight elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school - all part of the Farrington School District. The Honolulu Community College is located in the same grounds as the high school.
