Kapalama dates back to the 1900s. This older community is very tight, mostly because Hawaiians and part-Hawaiians settled it during that time. Kapalama is comprised of single-family residences and multi-family homes, at medium prices. It has a dense population and the district has many commercial and residential buildings. However, due to its old origins, many of the retail is owned by small family businesses that represent the center of the community, mostly well-known mom and pop's and well liked grocery stores and food markets. This type of local shopping offers residents the best local staples that are not available in some of the large chain supermarkets.
Multi ethnic eateries and restaurants provide the best service along the strip mall throughout Dillingham Boulevard. For health services, the community depends on the Kalihi-Palama Health Center. This clinic is affordable and offers full service to residents in the area. It also offers educational and informational campaigns to help meet the needs of the residents of the area. Kapalama counts with eight elementary schools and a middle school, as well as a High school. It also has a community college in the same grounds as the high school.
