Newtown, a recent addition to Pearl City, is a community with many newly built condos and houses. Once used primarily for different types of farming, the area was home to rice, taro, and watercress in addition to sugarcane and pineapple. The school system that students are serviced by is the Pearl City complex, with eight elementary schools for younger students and the Highlands Intermediate and Pearl City High School for the older students. Noted for its music program, Pearl City High School's marching and concert bands have traveled internationally to play their music.
