Historic Waipahu, located on the scenic island of Oahu has been renovated to keep up the lovely old city modern and up-to-date. It has been seen in many different incarnations; starting as a fishing village, Waipahu next transformed itself into a wetland farm area. Later still, during Hawaii's sugar boom, Waipahu became a bustling plantation town, remnants of which are still visible in the town's architecture, which has been preserved for posterity. In fact, there is a living history museum dedicated to the plantation era in Waipahu. Hawaii Plantation Village shares the state's rich history, particularly during the years of the sugar boom, which changed Hawaii forever. In addition to the many historical attractions, Waipahu also has plenty of venues for shopping; restaurants and grocery stores are also available, as are a number of other services vital for any resident of the island.
There are a number of large shopping centers for dedicated consumers, including Waipahu Shopping Village Shopping Center, Westgate Shopping Center, and Waipahu Shopping Plaza Shopping Center. If you don't feel like shopping, perhaps a trip to one of Waipahu's beautiful parks will suit your mood. Many families gather at the Honowai Neighborhood Park, Waipahu Field, and Waipahu Cultural Garden Park for weekend recreation. If you enjoy sporting events, perhaps a trip to Hans L'Orange Park to see the West Oahu CaneFires play minor league baseball will fit the bill. Residents send their children to one of Waipahu's five elementary schools, and the children eventually progress on to Waipahu Intermediate and High Schools. Parents who wish to forgo public school can also send their children to Hawaii Tech Academy, a charter school that is in the district.
