Kalama Valley is an established neighborhood located in the far east of Hawaii Kai, and is extremely distinct in a geographical sense. Uphill from Sandy Beach or downhill from Koko Head Crater, Kalama Valley is nestled into the cliffs, or the “Pali”, which stand tall above the shores of Waimanalo.
On your way to the valley you pass by the Queens Gate, a gated secure community-playing host to upmarket, golf course homes, as well as Laulima, a place for smaller golf course homes. Then you will see, at the base of Koko Head Crater, the newly developed Koko Villas. There are over 1000 family homes housed here all built in the 1970s and 80s.
It is worth knowing that Kalama Valley, and its history, is very significant in Hawaiian politics because it is viewed as the birth place for the Hawaiian Sovereignty movement, started in 1970 – the same year many long time farmers were forced to move to allow for further development to region.
Kalama is translated to “flaming torch”, derived from “light” in Hawaiian, or “lama”. The lama trees were believed to have sacred wood, and as such they were used in ancient Hawaiian hula performances.
The locals can shop at the Koko Marina Center, Hawaii Kai Center and the Hawaii Kai Towne Center; all located only minutes away, which is very convenient as the valley itself only houses one restaurant a small convenience store. The closest schools are also conveniently located, only a 10-minute trip away.
Kalama Valley, on the eastern border of Oahu, is renowned for it’s proximity to fabulous surfing hotspots and prestigious gold clubs. Houses here range in price from as little as $510,000 to $900,000.
