Kualoa Regional Park is situated on the Windward coast of Oahu. The park has a serene atmosphere so you should be able to have a relaxing day here. In the Hawaiian language, Kualoa refers to long ancestral background. The name is given because of a superstitious legend.
Many years ago, the Hawaiians considered it as a sacred site. It is listed as a sacred site in the National Register of Historical Places. The Hawaiians considered it as a sacred site because they often see whalebones on the shore. They use the whalebones to make all kinds of jewelry. The whalebones are also used to make tools. There is a large grassy area for people who want to go picnic. There are 30 campsites at the park. It is open throughout the week. However, it is closed on Wednesday and Thursday. The Kualoa Mountain is not exposed to the sounds of vehicles in the highway. You can camp on the Kualoa Mountain at night safely because there will be security guards at the site. There is also a comfort station located within the proximity.
From the distant, you can see the Chinaman Hat. The local legend claims that the Chinaman Hat is the remains of a dragon. The goddess Pele’s sister saw the dragon and got into a fight with it. During the fight, the goddess kills the dragon. After he killed the dragon, he threw the tail to a distant area in the sea. This is why the people call the Chinaman Hat island Mokoli’i. Mokoli’I means little lizard. It is a term that the people use to describe the dragon’s tail.
If you observe closely, you will find that the island looks very much like a hat. Chinaman Hat Island is quite near so you can paddle or swim to it. You can also surf to the island. Many people like to go to the Chinaman Hat Island to picnic. When exploring the Chinaman Hat Island, you can lookout for the shearwater bird. The bird has black and white feature. You can often find the shearwater bird nesting in the native trees.
The field has several trees that provide shades. Various types of facilities can be found at the Kualoa Regional Park including barbeque grill, restrooms, showers and pay phone. The beach at Kualoa Regional Park is infested with the Portuguese Man of War jellyfish during June – September so you must be careful.
