On the edges of the eastern foothills of the Ko'olau Mountains rest the middle to upper-priced housing community called Niu Valley. Located on Oahu's eastern coast, the weather in Niu Valley is sunny and dry, allowing residents to fully enjoy the beautiful beaches in the area. Kalanianaole Highway provides access to NIu Valley, and the community rests alongside the high class shopping center in Hawaii Kai and the more commercial spots in the Kahala Mall, which is home to the highest density of commercial property and is host to such stores as Macy's, Barnes and Noble, and a little theater for films. Grocery shoppers make the most of the Whole Foods market located in the mall, and there's also a nearby Times Supermarket.

Niu Valley is also just a jaunt away from Aina Haina Shopping Center as well as the Niu Valley Shopping Center, both of which are small shopping complexes with different dining options as well as other service centers. If residents are willing to travel farther down the Kalanianaole Highway, they can find even more stores and dining choices at the Hawaii Kai Towne Center and the Koko Marina. Students in Niu Valley attend the Kaiser complex school system; there are a number of elementary schools, and then it feeds into the Niu Valley Middle School, and then on to Kaiser High School.
